I am contemplating buying a Cox 22 Swinranger and would appreciate any comments from other owners concerning performance etc.

I am an experienced sailor and currently sail a Vivacity 20, but need a boat with a bit more room, due to an ongoing lack of mobility on my part.

I am not looking to traverse oceans, only sail the East Coast and rivers.

I have never sailed one, but I did berth next to one over winter one year and I was very impressed with the amount of room for a 22ft boat and with the build quality. The owner had sailed in the Irish Sea and had made numerous passages to the Isle of Man from Preston and spoke very highly of the performance of the boat in heavey weather. He said it would sail close hauled better than one would expect and he had a Yanmar 1GM10 which is normally a very reliable engine. I also sail in your area (moored on the Deben) and I would consider the Swinn Ranger to be ideal for the purpose you describe. The guard rail had been removed from this boat and a very substantial stainless steel hand rail fitted around the coachroof which made access going forward easier, and in my opinion, safer as there was less to get in your way and an excellant hand rail to hang on to. This bloke sailed single handed all the time. Good Luck. Paul

Thanks for that Paul.

I wondered if a Swinn Ranger would sail reasonably close-hauled and wouldn't expect a motor sailer to be too lively anyway.

However, I suppose a boat like this is based on being built for comfort, not speed. (A bit like me I keep telling the wife).

I remember seeing the Swinn Rangers being built in Brightlingsea many years ago by K H Marine when I lived there. I wasn't ready for one then and was more content flashing about The Colne in dinghies and speedboats in those days.

I wondered about the space between the guard rail and the cabin side, which seems narrow, making the wire more a hinderance than a help. Removing it, or stepping around the outside, providing a decent hand rail is fitted to the cabin roof, looks like a good way to go.

Most of my sailing lately has been on The Stour and The Orwell, but I intend to sail up The Deben sometime and may see you there. Cheers for now.

Terry

Your post intimates that a Cox 22 and a Swin Ranger are one of the same, not so, they are different boats.
I owned a Swin Ranger for about 17 years, sailing it to France and the C.I’s twice and occasionally three times a year.
With a long keel and bilge plates she was no racer, so pointing ability was average, but good when motor sailing.
The engine was a 1GM and would push her along all day at 5 knots, I took mine to the Med via the Seine, canals and Rhone returning via the Midi and Rance twice, the engine was as good as gold.
I found that she did suffer from weather helm, but managed to moderate it by attaching an 8 x 4 inch plate to the forward edge of the rudder. I came to the conclusion that she would benefit no end with a 3 foot bowsprit, this would have given her much better balance.
Accommodation is excellent for size, there are two basic layouts, heads in forward cabin or aft in main cabin. Headroom is 6 ft plus! Storage is amazing, I stored two fold up shopper bikes in one of the under bunk lockers!
Mine had no guard wires, the side deck walkway is too narrow to accommodate them and I thought it would be more dangerous to negotiate with them.
I have seen a Yawl rigged version, but to my mind the masts were a pathetic half-hearted affair. Mine was masthead sloop, the mainsheet can be attached to a transom traveller, but it can take your head off, especially if you have an unexpected jibe! I mounted mine to the forward cockpit seat.

If you want more info, PM me an e-dress and I will mail you some details and pics. Also have a look here

Thanks for the information Nigel.

I am obviously confused about the correct name, but the boat I was looking at is advertised as a Cox 22 Swin Ranger. Your one sounds the same as the photo I saw. The Cox 22 was built by Cox Marine, Brightlingsea Shipyard, whilst the Swinn Rangers were built by K & H Marine, Lime Street, Brightlingsea.

I was most interested by your comments and would appreciate any other info as offered. My E-mail address is tecstel@btinternet.com.

Thanks

Terry

Re: Swinranger

The boat I was refering to was a Swinranger, 22 ft. I did not know what the Cox name had to do with the Swinranger and know nothing about a Cox 22.
If you intend to come up the Deben look out for me, moored just above the pub at Ramsholt to starboard shore.
Regards. Paul

Until November last year I used to own a Cox 22 and kept her in Brightlingsea. Her new owned moved her to Wivenhoe. (Only sold her as I wanted a bigger boat)

Pictures are still available at www.easternyachts.com if you look for Soulmate under the boats sold.

As a sailing boat she was excellent - I have heard of one that crossed the Atlantic but I did mostly coastal sailing with the odd cross channel.

If it is the Coxx 22 you are interested in and you want any more info please let me know

Thanks Peter

I looked the advert up and found your boat. Alas, it's not the same as the one I am looking to buy. However, I lived in Brightlingsea a few years ago and remember the boat now, having seen the photo in the add.

I confused it with the Swin Ranger ( the one I'm interested in) which was built in a yard not far from Cox's place.

I appreciate you taking the trouble to help, which shows what a friendly lot us sailors are.

Cheers Terry

Finally got 'My Girl' 22' Swin Ranger close to the house where I can work on her. Sail number is 21 well used and torn beyond practical repair.
Did Puffin have an inboard engine and if she did was there an inspection hatch in the deck o f the cockpit? My cockpit has no inspection hatch but a 'dished 'panel in the centre of the cockpit that might be for the installation of an inspection hatch.
My Girl did have an engine at one time but it and any shaft and prop were removed. I have purchased a good used Yanmar GM1 not yet fitted.
Swin Ranger 22's seem to be a rare breed.
Tx in advance for any response

Puffin had a Yanmar 1GM (not a 10) with a 3 blade prop. No cockpit hatch, only access to the engine is from the saloon.
Good luck with 'My Girl', not an elegant yacht but stacks of space inside, one of the smallest boats that you could live aboard you will find.

Thanks, Good to have my assessment confirmed.. I'd been looking for a boat with her size and characteristics for at least 4 years. She ticks all the boxes and although she requires some minor refurbishment, she's My Girl alright. Is it any harm to ask with what did you replace Puffin?

See my website montymariner.co.uk and avatar - a Colvic Countess, I've had it 21 years now!
Lovely looking boat Monty..
Have you any recollection of the spec on that 3 blade prop for Puffin? I'm being recommended a 13 x 9 3 blade for a 1 1/8 shaft for My Girl and wondered how it would compare with yours
Thanks for all the knowledge and logs you share
