I just realised that I've arranged a weeks cruising with no. 1 son from Chichester going west then back during Cowes week. He's only 9 and it'll be the first time for more than a weekend for him. Hence I want to do a few short hops down to Poole and back.

I'm planning Bembridge - Ryde - Yarmouth - Poole & back. What are my chances of getting into Yarmouth? I'd guess Ryde & Bembridge dry out enough not to be a problem but I may be wrong there as well.

A longer run as far west as poss or anchoring is places like Osbourne would be OK for me but it would be nice to get the boy onto land (& me in the pub).

My three boys (now between 10 and 15) have always LOVE going to Ryde.

Its pretty basic in terms of the showers and loos (just a couple of shower rooms each with a wash basin and WC attached to the local public toilets) but kids don't care about that!

What matters is that it has a lovely sandy beach, funfunfair for small kids (mine still love it!) great swimming pool with sliding roof depending on the weather, ice skating, ten pin bowling.

Very easy to get in and out on a rising tide a couple of hours before high. Tie up to a pontoon if you have a bilge or lifting keel. Otherwise tie up to the harbour wall (not quite so pleasant I guess as you have to climb a ladder when the tide is out but then I have a bilge keel so not a problem for me).

Really, I would recommend having a think about it.

Just realised you are already planning Ryde - Should read a bit more carefully. Anyway, we have NEVER had a problem getting space in Ryde - been there Cowes week, Round the Island and all sorts of other times. It does sometimes get a bit full but, as we only draw 2' 10" we just get in as early as we can as the tide comes up!

btw if your plans change and you wanted to show your No. 1 son Cowes week close up, I noticed some amazing last minute giveaway charter hosp. packages on ebay. There must be some unsold packages due to previous bad weather

Why would he want to do that when he has his own boat?

You wouldn't be the advertiser of said hospitality packages on ebay by any chance would you?

Thanks all. I'm based in Emsworth & am pretty familiar with the Solent but not during Cowes week.

I normally use the beach at Bembridge anyway and #1 son loves Ryde for the funfair. #2 does too so I may end up doing a swap half way through.

Seems as long as I avoid Cowes it should be OK. I may look at Newport though. The tide's on the up in the afternoons so I could get in before most as I only draw 1m.

Next is the weather. Certainly looks as though it could be fine but the synoptics show some pretty confused patterns comming in with some nice lows being held off. I only takes one ofd those to come in and things get interesting. #2 son (aged 5) get seasick but #1 is fine.
