Hello every one. Some time ago, a gentleman bought an old 19 foot sailboat here in Torquay. He had never sailed before and was looking for someone to give him a hand to sail the boat back to his home port at Emsworth. Having just lost my lovely partner to cancer about 6 months previously, i thought i would help the gentleman out, his name, by the way is Keith. We set off in the afternoon across lyme bay and took the outside passage at Portland. We put into Yarmouth at mid morning the next day, had a shower and lunch, then set off for Cowes, where we arrived late afternoon. Next morning we set of for Emsworth and arrived there safely in the afternoon.
Yesterday ( Sunday ) 3 large racing motor boats left Cowes at 9 o'clock for the annual Cowes to Torquay race and back. I went to Haldon pier to watch the leading boat come in at 10:10 ! That's 100 miles in 1 hour 10 minutes. I just cannot believe that could be possible. I have a small sailing boat and if i get 5 knots out of her i am pleased. Best regards, Oz.

Some time ago a young RN officer was Court Marshalled as after starting the Cowes to Torquay race greeted the first boats to arrive in Torquay! At the time the top speed of the vessel he was on was classified.

Is this a new Naval discipline system or did you mean Court Martial?
Can't seem to find much detail to the event in the Court records or via Mr Google, could you provide a reference please.

I will need to be more careful when using the English language. Of course I meant to say court-martialled.

I shall try and get some further details, this was back in the 1970's quite sure Mr Google was not about then.
