Just in case you hadn't see the notice to mariners and were going to the fireworks this Friday.....

"This notice is issued jointly with the Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth to advise mariners that a speed limit of 15 knots will be temporarily introduced in the Solent and Southampton Water areas to ensure safety of navigation following the Cowes Week Firework Display on Friday 7th August 2009.

The 15-knot speed limit will be in force between 2130 and 2300 BST, 7th August 2009."

The full notice to mariners can be found here

Anyone who takes a boat out on fireworks night needs their head examined.

Never had any real problems beyond the usual you might expect. Arrive early, depart late, and leave those departing to the nearby havens to it. Going back to Lymington you won't see many others on the water, and even to a haven like the Hamble, you only have to wait 30 minutes or so for the mass confusion to have sorted itself, with only a few boats departing then

Martin you should have kept the portofino then.

David, I love the Aqua Star to bits but once in a while a little bit of speed is what I miss! By the way there's a lovely picture of a grey Portofino 31 in September's MBY. Not yours by any chance?

Too many years back, we anchored off Cowes with all the other boats, nine people on board. The Calshot Activity Centre RIB got its anchor rope wrapped around one of my props. My brother stood on the winch button and dropped my anchor into a mooring line for a row of yachts. We went back in the dark on one engine.

Entering the Hamble, SWMBO fell overboard clutching a fender. There were boats milling about everywhere. I was shouting "Man overboard". I managed to pick her out with the searchlight and the Harbour Master fished her out and returned her to us.

Interesting evening.
