After reading a thread about a marine trimmer not being as reliable as they could just reminded me about a bit of a frustration I had getting a cover for my helm station made, eventually after near on a whole season managed to collar the chap I had asked a quote from and received a figure that made my eye's water..... so I began to think just how hard can it be...

well here are my efforts so far. I would add, I whipped up pretty well everything here in a couple of evenings, literally a couple of hours work. Cost, about £30 for a few meters of quality canvas.

Firstly, my helm station cover, and I threw in a cover for my wooden wheel to keep that nice.

my charts were fading, so covered them up too;

got a pair of small round portholes, a PITA to block out light from, they are frosted glass, but decided they needed a cover;

of course, once you get the hang of it you start to think up things that you can make with canvas... storage always needed..;

also made tiller cover for my bothers Westerly, bag for dinghy oars and dinghy seat... bag for just about everything actually... all easy stuff to do...

We could do with a new set of covers for Eos, if you make them I'll do a swap for my unknown implement which you're lusting after:):)

very impressed firefly looks like you are on a roll , a cover for everything. just a tech question, i assume standard sewing machine but is that with a special needle for canvass also thread used is that a canvass type thread ?

Yup, standard sewing machine of reasonable quality (but about 40 yrs old) heavy duty needles and 100% polyester thread.

Looks good - you must have quite a sense of satisfaction.

What's your next project, we are thinking of some pads for the foredeck, but weren't sure where to start ..or who to go to ?@!

Have a go, really easier than you might think. Get foam from upholstery shop cut to size, I suggest using Velcro at one end as zips can corrode.. This thread really should be moved to pbo...

Hi guys,

Seeing as this this topic is already about canvas and covers I think I have come to the right place, hopefully im speaking to the right peopple. Sorry, I'm a newbie btw. I have a 70' Ketch, it is my pride & joy and I wanted to ask about covers. I have a bespoke cover for it, but it has been repaired a number of times and is very weak, it won't last much longer. Would something like this work? http://www.qvsshop.co.uk/canvas-tarpaulins-1782-p.asp. I just haven't got the money for the cover at the moment and i'm hoping this would work for a few months before I am able to get e new bespoke cover.

Please let me know what you guys think?

It's a bit PBO really, but thanks!

Niice Jarb! :cool: (yank accent)

Well why not have a go? Everything is nicely covered and looks cared for.

Does make me wonder where you will stow them all when under way tho...

Perhaps you can make a 'hold all' with a velcro top to keep all them all safely. :encouragement:

Roger,

All covers roll up in their own bespoke storage bags.

You just don't realise how OCD I am…
