Courtesy Flags - Spain and Malta?

I have been sorting out my flag locker and have two questions.

I have found a flag which to all intends and purposes could be "Malta"?

It is three vertical colours 'green' at the hoist, 'white' in the centre and 'red' at the fly.

On the white vertical centre section is a shield quartered.

Top left - Crowned gryfon passant gauche with sword on red background.
Top right - Cross of St George.
Lower left - Yellow 'mitred cross' on red background.
Lower right - White Maltese Cross on black background.

I have a Maltese flag comprising the red and white vertical section with the St George Medal at the top next to the hoist.

So what is the other flag please?

The second question is about the Spanish flag.

Does the 'courtesy flag' comprise just the horizontal red, yellow, red or does it need the device (shield, crown and pillars entwined) in the centre of the yellow close to the hoist. In my flag locker, I have the one without the device?

Spain - if you buy a flag here it has the device but the one I bought mail order from UK didn't. There is no difference so far as the Spanish are concerned.

Thanks for that and I know both will do and most folk couldn't care less but I know one is correct and the other one is not correct but British chandleries will still sell the incorrect on as a flag that 'will do'?

I am just trying to establish the correct flag.

Italian civil ensign

The Green, White & Red flag with the quartered shield sounds like an Italian civl ensign.

The red and white vertical with George Cross is the Maltese national flag, but Malta is one of the handful of countries with a national ensign which should, therefore, be used as a courtesy flag.
It is derived from the merchant ensign of the Knights of St. John and comprises a white Maltese cross on red field with white border on four sides.
I have no input on the "green-white-red" tricolour with quartered shield.

The Green, White & Red flag with the quartered shield sounds like an Italian civl ensign.

Thanks for that. Even though I knew it was basically the Italian colours, I was beguiled by the St George and the Maltise Cross which are both associated with Malta.

As you state, it is certainly the Italian civil flag.

It is a very long time since I was 'tossing bunting'.

Correct courtesy flag for Malta

The correct courtesy flag for Malta is the 'National Flag' (i.e. the flag with white and red vertical stripes and the George Cross in the corner).

The civil or 'Merchant Ensign' is reserved for ships on the Maltese register only.

The Maltese Authorities have stated that: 'The Merchant flag is not to be used as a courtesy flag', so it would be rather discourteous to do so!
