I have an appointment to keep in Graye-sur-Mer in early June on behalf an elderly man now passed. I'm looking to sail in to Courseulles-sur-Mer. It's early days in planning terms but I'm interested in any advice about:-
  1. Navigating the approaches - (looks like it might be nasty in an onshore?)
  2. Closest place to check in (can't find anything on the port website).
  3. Any top tips for accommodation/grub
many thanks.

It is maybe thirty years since I went there. Before Decca It was a bit of a challenge to navigate the coast, mainly by counting the church steeples. The entrance is shallow and tidal but not unduly problematic providing you follow the instructions. I never did it in an onshore wind but I imagine it would be inadvisable. On the whole, the area is rather quieter than on our side of the Channel and I think you would be unlucky to meet rough water there. I can't help you with current arrangements but I remember it as a nice little town that we enjoyed several times.

I have here a 2017 edition of the French Bloc Cotier almanac. There are two pages dealing with CsM, giving approaches, lock times, facilities, etc. and also a chartlet.

I would be happy to scan these pages and PM them to you.

Thank you, that would be incredibly kind - and would help start to crystallise ideas.

Thank you very much. I'll watch out for it. I suspect a scan requires some 'digestion' by the servers so I imagine it will take a little while.
It's not the servers that are slow, c'est moi!

I have sent the PM, if the pictures are not with it, let me know and I'll try and do it properly.

I just made a scan of the Almanach du marin breton pages (not the latest edition), should you want them just PM an email address, they are 2, about 1.5Mb each :)
I would also like to see those please. So I can see if that almanac is better than the Bloc Cotier I currently use.

I'll send you a PM.

Was there a few years ago. No obvious landmarks on the shore. Reeds talks about a cross near the entrance but the one they mean is only visible very close in. There is however a conspicuous Croix de Lorraine on the beach a mile or two west of the entrance marking the point where De Gaule landed.
The Canadians have built a fancy new D-Day museum nearby. It's fancy polished metal cladding was covered in guano when I was there.

I’ve been there a few times as a good friend lives there. For hostelries I can recommend L’Petit Mousse just by the harbour - excellent Moules and other seafood. I think your nearest customs facilities are Caen / Ouistrehem where the Portsmouth ferry arrives. If you need more input on the navigation side I can check with my friend who sails from there.
