2. Why does my puter send loads of data as soon as I go online and what is it sending and to who? I have just gone online 10 mins ago and its sent 2 mb and received 1 mb, it never used to do this. is it a V*rus?

3, ok, three things, progress on the boat is good, all the inside of the cabin has had its final coat of half anf half today and will be top coated 2mora, I am high as a kite, inside the bog is finished, but not the door and up front is finished, starting to look like a boat, cabin windows go in on sat.

Will you please stop sending me all your dirty socks and Y Fronts, I have just received 2MB of the stuff. I sent 1MB back as too dangerous to use, the other MB I will use to scare off any marauding PitBulls.

Don't like the sound of your computer uploading so much. Have you checked it for viruses with a recent virlist?

Is your computer sending and receiving large amounts everytime you log on.Could have just been your mailbox sending and receiving emails
Have you downloaded or installed anything new recently.

If you don't have an up to date virus checker you should certainly get on (grisoft.com do a good freebie)

If it keeps happening, you can install some software to monitor what is accessing the internet, and block it if necessary. There are some spyware programs you can accidentally pick up while surfing, which aren't always picked up by antivirus software, and which access the internet and report back to base, sometime incrementing themselves in the process.

holler if you need info on the latter

Byron,

Sorry about all the pants, could you please sort through them and return any M & S ones with small holes (M & S with big holes can be used for boat polishing) or any other brand without holes to be returned also.

Other brands with holes and all socks to be used for polishing plastic boats, wooden boats to be polished with new cotton only.

Problem solved, BrendanS pointed me to a website, free SW installed and 9 virus's (viri?) deleted.

mmmmm I got an email from a company warning me I might have a virus , they said it is or was on their pc and they thought they'd warn all in their address book.
Lord Byron told us all about mail washer :).
I open every thing I think could be iffy through that while the emails are still on the server . This definitely helps .
One thing is happening an ad page pops up the address has ( gain ) in it . I think my son down loaded stuff for his mini disk player and it came with that.
I have gone through my programme files and deleted it from there and add remove programs , but it still comes up every now and then . Is it from MSN ? or another , does any one know ? I don't like stuff on my pc that I don't control .
Cheers
Mick

In less than ten hours I'll be there collecting all the brochures that are a must have !!! and maybe just maybe spending dosh on lecy bits :-}

what does it look like and do? If (gain) is part of the address, do you have the whole address..... then we can tell you what it is and does, and if it's not normal nor wanted, how to get rid of it permanently

If you don't already have a personal firewall on your PC, I would strongly recommed you got one. I've been using Tiny Software's fw, at least version 3 was free for private use.

The firewall let's you know if some unauthorized user is trying to contact your computer, it also let's you monitor the data coming in and going out. This way you can see exactly what of your programs is sending the data out.
