Couple of Q\'s ref AD41 tappets & 290 trim/tilt pump?

Hi,

Can anyone post me a link to the correct method of adjusting the tappets on my 1991 AD41B's........?

And I'm also wondering if there is such a thing as a pump seal overhaul kit for the trim/tilt pump on my 290 legs.
I'm getting drive creep during motoring but not losing any oil so I suspect its the pump and not the ram.........unless you know different?

Thanks
Rob

Hi
To check your valve clearances, first the clearances are the same for intake and exhaust - 0.40mm, firing order 1 5 3 6 2 4, the corresponding cylinder whose valves will 'rock' are 6 2 4 1 5 3. No 1 is front of engine, closest to you.
Adjust the valve clearance for cylinder 1. Turn the engine a third of a turn in the direction of rotation and check the play on cylinder 5. The vavles on cylinder 2 then 'rock'.Check the play for the other cylinders in firing order.
Regarding your outdrive, I take it the boat is still in the water?
Even if it is or not, see if you can lift the leg up by hand or push down if not fully up, not as daft as it sounds, the seals on the piston can be worn allowing the fluid pass, this would not show up as a leak as no fluid is being lost, it is a pressure leak internally.
I hope this is of some help.

My experience with cars and diy in years gone by.........
I would know TDC by the timing marks on crankshaft pulley,is it the same with these?

The quote from the manual is "Turn the engine in the direction of rotation until cylinder 1 piston is at TDC after the compression stroke. At this the valves on cylinder 6 rock".
However I turn the engine watching the valves to get the firing order correct and when cylinder 1 'rocks' I start the checks - I hope that last bit made sense, I know what I meant!

Yep think I'm with you now!
Go easy it is Monday a.m. afterall! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Is it prudent to replace the rocker box gaskets at the same time?

PS ref drive, yes boat is in the water and there for the season!!! Hence the cylinder seals are bypassing oil then thats the way its gonna have to stay for this year........

Unless there is a a "magic snake oil cure"?
