got a couple of big fords (old Trader d types...must be 30 years old)...that are well past their sell by dates...looking at putting a couple of modern types in

Trouble is the boat is steel and the engine room hatch will deffinately never pass the old engines through....

Question

Is it best to strip the old engines down and pass the bits through the hatch and likewise for the new engines....or...lift the boat out and cut big holes in the sides and pass the engines through the holes

Depends on how handy you are with a welder! But I'd strip them down and remove that way, profesionals would cut a hole.

How does a complete strip down and rebuild prior to first run affect the warranty on a new motor?

What happens if one of the new ones needs a repair in the first 100 hours? Strip and rebuild with the fault so that the agents can repair?

Get the hole cut!

Hi Stephen

I'll be watching this with interest, as I also have a couple of Ford D-types (c.1970) which could do with being taken out and rebuilt.

In the meantime, the following links may be of interest:

Cheap Part from the States

If you want cheap parts, try Ford New Holland - these engines were also used in tractors and their parts look good value. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good luck.

if you want to rebuild the engines, give Mermaid Marine Engines a ring, they still do the old Fords, and carry all the spare parts. 01202 891824. they are in Ferndown, Wimbourne, Dorset. BH 21 7RN.
