Coughing and spluttering YAM 60FETO

Took the boat out for a 'clear out' run with fresh fuel and it just wouldn't come on to the plane. It felt as though the rev limiter related to low 2 stroke oil in the autolube system had kicked in. At the same time the trim & tilt section on the digital tacho had gone haywire but the oil level read full and the tacho seemed OK. Checked the oil tank and it was full. Checked the T&T sender and it's mechanically OK.
I pulled the boat out of the water and checked the engine on the muffs. It starts no problem but coughs and splutters at idle. It revs OK on the throttle but I think the misfiring is masked by the revs. I've had a meter on the coils - they're OK, replaced the HT leads and plug caps + new plugs.
The charging coil is working, giving me 13.7 volts through a split charge relay in the system.
I've blown carb cleaner into the engine and I've now got fuel system cleaner in the petrol but it's still coughing. I haven't taken the fuel filter out but I can see the element and it looks spotless.
Any ideas please?

Problem with a sensor? Electrical thing going haywire could be a bad connection, earths ok?

Sounds like fuel, has it been standing over winter with fuel in the carbs. I have had at least a dozen outboards in for poor running/starting after winter layup. Nearly every one had water in the float bowl which had corroded the bowl and blocked the jets.

Possibly but I'm not up to stripping re-setting triple carbs. Think I'll leave it to the experts.
