I heard the translated version on Five Live, I cannot understand what the Captain was thinking, he refused to go back on board to assist?

Heard it last night, the captain basicsally sounds terrified!
His head is not on, he's babbling.
The coastguard guy gets very annoyed with him! Put it this way, if the play that recording in court, his goose is burnt, never mind cooked, well it is anyway, he'll never command a canoe from now on and probably end up in jail for a longish time.

Not sure if it had any substance, but when I was a kid Italian soldiers were known for their lack of bravery. Seems it extends to sea captains as well.
