Cost of survey for insurance?

Any idea whether insurance companies normally require a full out-of-the-water survey (10yr old boat), and how much a reasonable price for such a survey is? I know it's like asking how long is a piece of string, but I was quoted 600 Euros plus lifting out costs, which sounds a bit steep to me for something I don't really want anyway..., and wonder if it's cheaper elsewhere.

About ½ of that or less sound about right. Unless you are on the south coast then the sky's the limit - whatever they think you will pay.

Not sure about the out of the water bit but I needed an Insurance survey for my boat recently and I paid £150 for it (value of boat around £45,000)
http://www.yachtmasterinsurance.co.uk/ were the insurance brokers - excellent service - and they really wanted to know that the boat I had purchased - existed, was valued at the right price - had no major faults.
I phoned around surveyors that were local to the boat and found chose the cheapest as I was not in the least interested in his report except for getting the boat insured as I had done my own survey. cost in euro about €225

At 10yrs old ..... seems a bit harsh that you have Ins. Co wanting survey. Unless its a boat you are buying.

I would phone round .... people like Polestar Ins. (K.C.Powell) etc. may not want one ...

If you do have to have one - then ask around other boat-owners near you for reccommemdations of surveyor. Second make sure its just a survey to confirm seaworthiness and fit for duty - you do not need a report for "Purchase" where every nook and cranny is inspected to "find price reducing" faults. If Surveyor doesn't do such report or price is still up high as other report - find someone else.

But again ... 10yr old boat ? - Talk to K.C.Powell .... seriuously.

I agree with Small_boat_champ, I use Polestar (KC Powell) and all they want for next year is a boat yard to say yes it exists and is fit for purpose i.e. no great hole (except for my lifting keel !!) in the bottom.
