I'm looking at the courses guides from three local FE colleges, comparing prices of the RYA Dazed Kipper, YotMeister and VHF/DCS courses.

The first two, at around 22-25 weeks, cost from £110 to £280 at present. The radio courses vary from £66 ( for 4 timetabled hours ) to £110, for two full Saturday mornings.

Now, I know that the LSC has removed funding support to such courses, and that the RYA/MSC insist that the radio syllabus must include at least 8 hours of 'contact time' ( how on earth can they deliver the content AND do an assessment paper in 4 hours, including admin/safety brief/questions/PC brief, etc....? ) and I also know that quite a few FE colleges have simply pulled the plug on courses that are not self-funding.

Big Jimi S at RYA Towers pretends unconcern, for the distance-learning operators are making a killing....

I'd be interested to hear what these courses now cost elsewhere, and how many hours/sessions you actually get for your/our money.

I paid £75 for VHF/DSC and that was for a full 8 hour day on a Sunday at a local sailing school (its £55 for the DSC update for the older licences). There was also the £20 for the RYA for issue of the licence.

Day skipper - also did this at the same sailing school. Cost £310 and had a full week (5 x 8hr days), followed by 5 days practical sailing for the rest for £380 all in.

I have no connection to the school, other than a satisfied customer, but here is the link if you want to have a look (has all the necessary course details/content).

We do the SRC for £60 plus the £20 for the 8 hours - dont do just the update. Do the shorebased DS for £110 and the YM for £120 including copy of colregs, logbook etc. All are primarily a service to club members but we do take non members too.

Tutors are unpaid - just club members doing their bit.
