Hi all

I have a 1987 41' and have been tracking the costs over a six year period. I am on a swinging mooring on the south coast and pay for engine servicing, haul out and winter hard standing in a marina with all services available.

The per foot figure below includes:
Insurance
All storage and mooring charges
Engine maintenance
15 days overnight costs in a marina during travels
Fuel
A/F

It does not include any repairs
Beer
Food
Damage caused by guests

£160

Comments?!

£114.
That includes all boaty costs except for fuel and mooring fees when we are away.
I don't include depreciation; you can only go so far with these things!
I do all the work on the boat myself and, no, I don't include for my time!

What about travel costs to boat? We live a couple of hours away from ours and have also spent quite a bit on overnights/meals out when we had to do work on the boat and couldn't stay on her. I don't think I'll add it all up.

A smidge over £20,000 over the last 10 years including a new engine and all fuel but excluding food, drink, anchoring/marina fees whilst away.
Works out around £71 per foot per annum or, more to the point, £43 per days use. That's the first time I have ever dared calculate that last figure and it is very sobering if not scary.
Now retired, the daily cost has come down to somewhere closer to £30 per day because we use the boat rather more.
I think this may be the last time I calculate any of these figures...

I think per foot is only part of the equation (antfoul, marina fees, rigging). Most of my unplanned expenses are engine related, and I suspect the age / maintenance history of the engine plays a greater role here than the length of the boat.

It's not that bad, really. Go to a couple of holiday cottage websites and see what you've have to pay to rent somewhere in similar places. The entire running costs for my boat this year wouldn't pay for a week somewhere nice.

The thing you must never, ever do is work out the cost per mile.

I reckon ours costs us £60/day that we are on board (40 three day weekends pa roughly). I guess that is expensive but how to value enjoying one's life? I have some shares and my own business which also have a heavy cost which only bring worry, stress and potentially a financial gain. The boat looks like money well spent in comparison! One must enjoy oneself as the calendar ticks over.

From Pink Floyd -

"And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun."

.....and......

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time. Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, Thought I'd something more to say."

I know it is trite but you really can't take it with you.

Poetry, sheer poetry from Mr Waters. Just going to put it on now!

On that calculation, I come out at £117/ft, on a marina pontoon, but do 90% of maintenance myself and don't chock boat out of the water in the winter.

Price per night on boat is about £25...but price per mile doesn't bear thinking about.

As many of you know I charter our boat out to defray some of the cost but hence it has to be in an expensive marina and I bought new. Its 43'. Annual costs per ft after deducting charter income is approx £230 per ft. Boat now 9 seasons old so some large bills soon but depreciation so far is approx £1400 per ft over the 9 yrs.

Its a mugs game!!

Clever enough to earn the money to afford a boat but stupid enough to then buy one!!! or is it "He who dies with the most toys wins"?
