Hi.
I have to get a new port/stbd pulpit light for my sailboat and there seems to be huge disparity of prices ranging from less than £10 up to around £90. They look in the photos online very similar but I guess there must be a difference in Quality. All the ones I am looking at state visible fit 2 miles for boats up to 12 M we are 10. Just wondering if anyone has experience of the cheap and expensive ones or can recommend one
Thanks

Many really cheap ones corrode and fail quite swiftly, IMHO. Some very expensive ones fail just as quickly- and there are threads here on this.
It's anecdotal, I know, but 'best bang for buck' seems to be from the middle-range of costs.

IMHO, it's also important for one's actual security and peace of mind to have a 'reversionary means' of displaying nav lights. They do fail....

The actual design and manufacturing cost of these is very low. Some of the price stems from making you pay for high certification charges that manufacturers pay to get a collection of logos on them (which does nothing for you). The rest is a blatant and unashamed ripoff, much like what you see in the diesel heater market.

After some research, I've went with be below Sea-Dog ones to replace our bow lights. They're nice and bright and the stainless is good quality. Easy to fit. They're on the wet end of the boat and when it gets rough they spend some time under water. Being mounted on the toe-rail, they occasionally get stepped on too, although I try not to. Still look (and work) like new three years later. They also do or did make a version with just a plastic housing, but it didn't look as sturdy, so I would suggest the stainless ones.
