Cost of lift out and a bit of hardstanding

Where have you seen me complain?, I've explained why I choose to pay what I do, and I haven't sneered.

There are many here Solent based, but also many more who are based all around the UK, many in very cheap moorings, and if you hang out here for a bit and read their posts, you'll find many are jealous not only of their mooring fees and other costs, but also their locations.

It's just that many of us can't relocate just to justify boat usage and cheap moorings, so sneering at the rest of us for having to pay high prices we dislike is a little bit antisocial

I have read this thread and wonder If I am the only forum member that belongs to a
boat club. My moorings, in central London, are reasonable the club has dry dock and plenty of willing assistance. Dry dock in winter 20p per foot per week. Pontoon mooring
£1200 per anum, drive from home 30mins, Tower bridge forty mins, estuary two hours
at planing speed.
I'm happy with club et al

There are cheap moorings available on south coast too, but the waiting lists are large. My 'extortionate' mooring had a two year waiting list. If you are willing to do without electricity, pontoon access to boat etc, then there are bargains to be had still, eg in upper reaches of Hamble and Southampton Water etc, but not that many of them, though others berthed there can probably provide more recent prices and experience

Hi,
Having read this thread a couple of times I don't think you were sneered at by anyone. Perhaps you're being a bit touchy here.
In Kingsbridge a group of boaters organise themselves in a similar way to you, I helped them on the due date last month, though our boat is still in the water.
Brendan is correct when he says that many people can't/don't take advantage of the DIY system of laying up. This is for a variety of reasons, the main one being the difficulty in finding such a scheme in the area where one wants to keep the boat. Convenience/idleness is another reason for using the expensive "marina" service. Boaters all have different priorities - thank god.
We like to keep our boat in the water for most or all of the year so can't/don't utilise your method. We will have to pay someone in Salcombe to pull the boat out on a cradle during January and leave it there for a couple of days whilst we service the outdrive and re-do the antifoul - was last lifted out 2 years ago. This is still considerably cheaper than a normal lift out, storage and lift back in.
Even better, we don't have to pay anything for our berth - gloat, gloat /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Costs do vary a lot anywhere you go.In our local Medway area you could pay only 120.00 a year for a trot mooring and 10.00 a week to use the cradle on their slip or at the other end of the scale would guess at say 2K a year in one of the posh marinas and 250.00 for lift out and time on hard. All down to conveniece vs how deep your boating pocket is I guess.

Probably was a bit touchy so please accept sincere apologeticals all , but still don't see the point of complaining about fees when other options are ruled out , it would be like me complaining about the half hour it takes me to get to tidal waters , but never mind , no hard feelies /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
