It is time for me to renew my insurance, the survey is now out of date. What is the likely cost of a new survey Colvic Atlanta 31' Ketch, bilge keel.

Any advice gratefully received - as always,

David

Are you sure you need a new survey? . Probably between £3-500, but find out what your insurer wants and then phone a couple of surveyors for a quote. Also get quotes from other insurers as not all ask for surveys, or have different time spans.

Sailorman,

My last survey is now 6 years old and the Insurance wants a new one.

I don't want to have to pay out £3/500 unless I have to do so, I'take others advice an find a company that will cover me, but must also include singlehanded and night sailing.

Regards

Re: Cost of insurance??

Hi
I have asked GJW for a quote, they have come back much cheaper, than my present company, but insist on a full Survey. hence the question.

regards

Suggest you get an idea from the insurer what they want to see. Then ask a surveyor to provide the basic hull and rig survey for insurance purtposes - they know what is required generally - an opinion as to seaworthiness. The condition of the peripherals, the presence of osmosis etc etc and incidental gear is mostly beside the point.

You should get by with no much more than a £200 charge for that.

Re: Cost of insurance??

GJW were happy to give me 12 months to get a survey done after I purchased my 1971 yacht. After the 12 months were up I needed another month to get the survey done while she was out for antifouling, so I asked for a 1 month extension and GJW simply said I needed to get a survey before the next renewal, ie a 12 month extension, so its worth asking.

Mmmm..... I never had a survey for my insurance .....

but then maybe the insurance never intends to pay for anything.
