Morning all.
Just received invoice for winter engine service. Volvo MD40 (I think, info not to hand). 4 cylinder diesel 40 HP.
Labour 100Euro (all boaty things in Turkey priced in Euros!)
Filters, impeller,oil,antifris(sic) 210E
Shaft anode 31E
Total 341 Euros.
Seems a bit expensive to me but I wonder how it compares with UK and elsewhere. Suppose I should do it myself but I feel reassured by a mechanic's overview once a year

Good morning Giles, had my annual service in January by Volspec in Ipswich £250 but no anode as boat was in the water. I agree, a certain amount of confidence having an engineer complete the work if one does not have a great deal of knowledge in this field. It is worth being on board to watch over the work as we have heard of many instances where not all procedures were completed. Compared to a car service where the whole vehicle is looked at it seems expensive, but doesn't all work on boats. D I Y can be achieved using pattern filters and good quality oil for just a few £ . Yer pays yer money ----------- Barry.

Like everywhere else, you can find cheaper service if you have the time to shop around. I am also in Turkey (Marmaris) and I think I have the same engine, MD2040. I usually pay 20 euro's per hour in labour rate. Your 100 euros would be five hours which sounds excessive for the work involved, even considering that putting on a new anode means that you first have to take the prop off (assuming you also have an s-drive?). The charge for filters also seems high, but difficult to judge without knowing the details. How many fuel filters do you have?

Shaft drive so easy anode job. Not sure how many filters I have ? 1 air, 1 oil. I guess the cost of the seawater impeller accounts for much of the cost. In Turkish swindleries an impeller, from memory, costs about 40 Euros

We have our engine serviced in Nidri- Lefkas, 4 cyl. Volvo. The bill was 108-euros. I can't say what work was done as we don't get a breakdown of the invoice. I assume it is just oil and filter changes.

If you have a shaft drive, then I would really question the labour charge. 5 hours sounds like more than it should be. Yes, the impeller is expensive. I have managed to find it for 32 euros, but not much difference there. It costs 25 euros in Sweden.

find an english qualified engineer and take him out for dinner and a couple of drinks then ask him to show you the basics of engine servicing and trouble shooting offer him £150 and you will then save £250 a year i did this about 25 years ago and have done all my own engine work including a complete rebuild od our thornycroft 65. in the past 25 years i have saved myself thousands.

Seems OTT to me .Paid less than half that in Fethiye last year from guy who does most of the charter boatd there -- he`s very good. Also paid only 300 euros for two guys to take out our fuel tank after emptying it, taking it to be steam cleaned and re fitting - took them all day but again did a great job.
