Aged Parent just got a quote for a cockpit cover for his Mobo - didn't make his day! Anyone got any ball park figures for something similar to be made in the UK?? Not actually looking to pop over next year, more after guide as to how much difference we are talking.

Jersey price is around a £1k, with the materials for £200 and the rest labour for 2 1/2 days. (I dunno what the material is - but as everything is more expensive down here I figure in England materials would be around £150).

Unfortunately do not have a picture of his boat available, the best I could fund online is below, but I think you can see enough that the cockpit cover is not ginormous!

Am currently having a new 'cockpit tent' (being called the conservatory by my so called friends) made right now. We had a couple of companies quote and the price was similar in both cases. Frame work including fitting was aroung 2KK and cover was about 1K.

Hope this helps....

I was quoted £1700 for a very nice sprayhood and zip-on cockpit cover for a Moody 31 including all the frames so £1k just for the cover in your picture seems a bit much. There is a company in Somerset called South & West Marine who make a replica if you send the original. No VAT and prices not bad - but I have not seen their work so this is not a recommendation. They might be able to quote if you ring them with boat details.

A friend of mine had an electrical factors and when anyone complained about the price he would say "Sorry - it's the profit that makes it so expensive"!

So that is labour at £40 an hour! I guess that there will be some overheads in that but it sounds expensive to me.
My friend ran a Marquee business and he used to get all sorts of special jobs done by a firm who made waggon covers. The prices sounded very reasonable.
Perhaps the trick is to avoid 'marine specialists!!

Without knowing the full extent of your cockpit cover / conservatory / tent, it is hard to figure a ballpark price. But I can tell you about sprayhoods. A custom job for our Westerly Storm (using the original metalwork) cost £530 from Quantum.

An excellent job, fitted perfectly and served us well during our recent four month cruise to Portugal.

What I will say is that I think it is crucial that your supplier operates near enough to you so that they can easily check the fit on location and get it exactly right. A fellow Storm owner took a cheaper option and bought "off the peg" from a distant supplier. He has regretted it ever since.

I like the quote "it's the profit that makes it expensive" - I must remember that! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sending the cover off to somone to make a copy is not the preferred option for the reasons stated. The Old Man doesn't mind (sort of!) paying for a good job, but their is always a limit! - and of course he still thinks in LSD, so anything with £1k as a prices gives him a heartattack /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

David, I made arrangments here with Paul Allman, in march this year to have a cover made, about the same size as your dads £1000, I says ok,heard nothing more from him, than he phones yesterday, says he is ready to start it now! I said f off. I will see about getting one made in France next year.

This internet malarky is not quite as Anon as it seems! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Old Man would prefer to get the cover made over here from his usual boatyard, but will now also probably look at France next summer - just won't be making a "song & dance" about the quote, cos he doesn't want to upset "anyone".......he's getting old see, and has mellowed /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You got any names in France yet??

BTW, Moody is apparently back in bizness, now working from home.......possibly his "Problems" are now behind him???..............

No not yet , but I was looking at some cockpit covers while there this summer, most of them looked very well made.

Hi David,

I recently had a cover made for my car (MG TF replica) by a company here in Guernsey for a very reasonable £500-ish. It might be worth giving them a ring - more convenient than going to the UK or France, at any rate. The company is called Graham Scott, tel Guernsey 259380.

As usual, no connection other than a satisifed customer...

Hope this helps,

Patrick
