Hi All,

I´m in La Coruna right now, but I can´t continue until I get some funds together. I´ve managed to swing a month of work, but in order to do it... Of course I have to stop here for said month.

I guess the question is, has anyone done the crossing over to Madeira/Canaries from the mainland during Dec? If I can get there by mid Dec, I still have a good shot at the Atlantic - I´m desperately avoiding having to spend another year in Europe.

Joe, who is next to me in the marina, lent me his copy of Ocean Passages of the World, which I have been madly reading. Lisbon to Madeira in Dec is out of his recommended dates, but then again, so was Biscay, and with a good forecast I made it no problems.

Particuarly interested in any first hand accounts, or obvious things I´m not aware of.

Thanks everybody,

Nick

I have done Lisbon/Cascais to Madeira twice; once in mid November and once in mid December. Both were beautiful easy crossings. Just check the weather and pick your window, there is lots of good information on this route. When you get to Madeira, stock up on wine as much as you can. It costs a fraction of what you have to pay in the Carib.

Peniche to Madeira in mid Dec, it was a fast crossing with a good NE, as said just pick a good window. A night in Porto Santo is worth it before you face the crowds in Madiera. Then again you aught to have a good run down to Tenerife or where ever from there. By the way if you left from Nazare, Mike and Sally Hadley, who look after the marina there, would be a great help with getting a good forecast etc, the Portugese forecasts are pretty accurate.

Nick, as said earlier to you lol..
after the end of Nov, no hairycanes..... no worries, uncomfortable in a blow, but no worries.
I think you need to stay in LC for the winter as the best women go out to play at xmas, its a Spanish tradition to bed a singlehander on the feast of the Epiphony or whatever its called..
however, at that time, in the canaries, its full of fit, but noisy, scouse call centre workers going to Veronicas 2 and getting their kit off to reveal tattoos and bed singlehanders with their sister, the posh birds from the south are easy to spot as they have tattoos spelt correctly and like to see if 4 in a vberth of a tessa 26 is possible (Them southern birds is well educated and adventurous ya know !) (You will HAVE to remove them sailbags first)...

hmmmm, on second thoughts... you might need to bugger off early.... I´ll lend ya me camera....

Cheers Phil, thanks for the info.

If you do it again, let me know. We can create our own Radio Net. Let´s call it MRC, 400stirling to enter. Leaving early Dec. Sign up here.

/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Sorry, just had some Spanish beer.

nick.

God, the feast of the Epiphony!! I completely forgot about that!

Yeah, basically, forget the whole sailing business. It´s tiring, boring, cold, and there is nothing worse than missing Spanish festivals.

Actually, wait a second. You´re telling me women with good tattoos will be in or near the Canaries too? Jesus, talk about confusing a man.

Anyway, you´re right, first priority is to dump the sails. They take up way too much room, and I´ve got to cover the V-Birth with plush red velvet, and then we can talk more about silly sailing routes later on.

So just let me start another thread about velvet... And the migration patterns of finely tuned members of the opposite sex.

nick.

Red VELVET ??? bloody hell no...... just get a cat, its been proved to bring out the caring nature and need to nurture in women.....

hmmm, thats probably boolox as Jaynes gone to bed and I got the cat...

Hmmm, red velvet, well I knew the Aussies were strange, but hey.....

ps, over on the ´"posh" pontoon we have the yank boat doing what basically sounds like a totally pissed up line dance to some texan twoddle.... ooops, Just went quiet.... nope, they at it again.... a few claps and burps and another "song" eminated form them......

Why is it only the "posh" pontoons make noises at night, it´dark fer gawd sake....

ps, one of the yanks came over earlier admiring your huge shiney Aussie flag Nick.... I had to explain the the stars on the flag were NOT due to recent invasion of the convict land...

Can I recommend, as its your first time in LC...., that on return from the drinking and smurfing establishments of this fair city you drop in on said yanks to "see how they are doing in the world".... they sound to have PLENTY of beer and no discernable voice... the beer should be free if you praise the star spangly thing and wear earplugs..

Meanwhile... we have plugged your electric blanket in (Just so the guys who read your blog dont actually believe that you actually ROUGH it)..
as requested, Jayne turned the heating up for you and put a few cold ones in the fridge.
Gadis was out of Chateaux Dief 78, so she has arranged it to be delivered at 0630 am by the morning maid.

We also noticed whilst letting the evening cleaner in to your boat, your password and username for your blog... be assured I would never, ever, add, alter or abuse it in any way......

www.bigoceans.com .... here we go !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had the best sail ever from Cascais to Porto Santo 4 December, just the No 1 genoa, 25 knots NW - N 505 miles in 80hrs.

Christmas and New year in Canaries finally got away heading West on the 16th Jan, for a leisurely (not pushing it) trip to Barbados.

Camarinas is a good place to stop and re fuel, before going round the corner. Cheap and friendly yacht club who run the pontoon stern to moorings or they did 3 years ago.

Have fun and enjoy Coruna, It is a great place, and take the train to Campostella for a day out.

Came over in 2005 and was in Tenerife for Delta........end November if I remember correctly. Winds up to 110kts. Weather is weather and anything can happen anytime. Got hit by Zeta on 30th Dec 2005 crossing. A beat into 55kt winds. Doddle!
