My saildrive has got very corroded due to loss of anode; the rubber seals on the base section are visible. I've booked a lift-out next week to replace the lower leg, but I'm nervous about running the drive in this condition.

[Later] This is within the marina.

Should I risk it, or get a tow? What is the worst that could happen?

IMHO only you can make that decision.

In my view, it would depend on how far and under what conditions you have to move her. If it's just within the marina you can probably just tow her with the tender or use paddles from on deck, or manhandle her using lines. If it's further afield can you sail then manoeuvre as above?

Can you stress test it on your mooring before departing? ..... for example, If you run at 3/4 throttle for 30 mins on the mooring there is a good chance it will be fine for 15 mins of 1/2 throttle on the run?

I was thinking about that, but I don't know what to expect if it goes tits up. Clanking noises, oil spill ...

The first thing thats likely to happen is that water will get in and or oil escape when the oil seal is no longer held tightly by its housing.

A bit of water in the lower drive wont matter if you are replacing it anyway. I dont know how long it will take before it finds its way into the upper gear box but since you will be draining the whole lot you will be able to flush it out if necessary.

The fun would start if the lower box is so badly corroded that the bearing and the prop shaft came adrft.

Quite simply it is a NO-NO NOGO !!

Not under any circumstances as the risk is far too high. Oil in the marine = big fine plus enviromental damage.

Risk of damage to the gearbox-not woth it. Get a tow.

All above is only my thoughts and not based on any facts.
