We've had the 12v system rewired, the electrician said that the domestic 240v wiring was wrong because it was "domestic household" wire. What should I use to rewire the sockets and what's the best source for buying it? Thanks. Simon

Standard domestic ring main and fixed lighting circuits use wires with single (thick) copper cores.

On the boat, due to more vibration, stranded copper wire should be used.. (and by stranded I mean that each of the coloured wires will be filled with multiple strands of copper rather than a single thick one). Less prone to breakage and hardening due to vibration.

Others will come along later and talk about pre-tinned wire.. but that sounds like overkill to me.

Hope this helps...

I'd agree. Unless the inside of the boat is absolutely swimming in water, ordinary flexible 3-core cable should be fine. Easy to buy from places like Screwfix (but be sure to check out their pricing for different colours of cable - there are alarming variations!).

Yep, should be tinned but if you look at the price I think you will go down the untinned domestic route as suggested. Within a machinery space it should be rated for oil and grease to conform to ISO standards.

When I rewire the 6 sockets, is it best to bring each one back to it's own MCB in the new consumer unit or to a junction box and into one MCB in a smaller consumer unit? Maximum simultaneous load is 25 amps 220v

Occasionally my electrical trade suppliers have stock of "old" 2.5 twin and earth, which is multistranded, rather than single core. Usually it has red and black insulation rather than the newer brown- blue.
Extensive international research has proved that electrons flow just as easily along wire coded red rather than brown

Yes, that's your link, but still doesn't work for me. I see that Jerzy Sychut is a political activist....

Its a link I have had booked marked for ages . Frequently referred to it and posted it here many times before.
