A good town for a pint. Nay, a bloody great town for one, two, and on.

Personally, I go straight for the Mutton Lane Inn (a little alley opposite HMV on Patrick St), where the local Microbrews (Franciscan Well) are served best, and in a good traditional environment, albeit with a quirky flavour and my type of music. Live trad on mondays too.

The Franciscan Well, as mentioned above is a local mirobrewery, but has it's own pub serving more of their own than most other spots- I've only seen Rebel Red (my choice), Blarney Blonde (Bland) and Friar Weisse elsewhere, but here they do a nice stout too, and maybe others. Also serve all the usual culprits too. To be found up a tiny alley through an unmarked copper portal on North Mall (as far as you can go alongside the quay by road before the road veers off, on the N side of town).

Sin E is the same ownership as Mutton, and although more interesting looking, with more live music and busier, I find the beer less tasty than in the Mutton (probably as here's a celler with pressure, and MLI is upstairs storage and gravity). Still nice though.

Same ownership again apparently is the Oval on South Main St (a little tucked back, near the Murphy's? brewery). It's a tad more studenty, but very laid back when I went, and quite nook&crannyish. Again the same FW beers, which I found tasting somewhere between the MLI and Sin E.

Rather more "trendy" is the Roundy, near St Augustines Church, just off Patrick St- on the corner of a side st heading to N Main St. A bit glam, but friendly staff when I went in, and serving some decent lagers (Staro on tap), for when you don't fancy heavier brews. Good coffee also.

Jem.
