Blimey! I've just realised who Tony Barebones is! A fellow CYC member.

Bev and I were in the CYC one afternoon. There was the usual chatter amongst the punters as we sat there and watched the boats playing in the Bay - including Corisande. The CYC has a huge window on the first floor with a commanding view of the Bay with Penarth Head in the far West and panning left, Southwards towards the East with a view of the docks buildings and the Norwegian Church in Mermaid Quay.

Bev sipped her coke in a most ladylike way, as I glugged my cider like the gorging beast I am, and we both gazed at the idilic view from the window - which included Corisande enjoying an afternoon's sail. Suddenly, the sky over Penarth went as black as black could be. I've never seen such a change in the weather. We wondered whether all of the boats had seen it too and we expected them to all be heading in away from the likely deluge.

Corisande turned to face the club as the blackness came over us and the wind blew hard. Because she lives with me, Bev has experienced really bad wind - but this kind of wind was the frightening sort, (although I can produce a few frightening gusts of my own).

You can see from Graham's excellent photos that Corisande's mast is high, in fact, it's the highest in our club. The wind then hit the boat on the port side and it went over - right over. The mast looked as though it was going to touch the water. Down it went and down it seemed to stay. The club went absolutely silent as everyone watched the bum-clenching event in front of us. The boat eventually righted itself (after what seemed like an age) and soon after, came back to her berth at the club.

I needed to pop back to my own boat on the pontoon. Having the bravery level of a particularly skittish sheep, there was no way I was venturing out. As I passed the pontoon, I called over to the crew on Corisande and chatted about what had just happened. They were very "matter of fact" about the whole thhing and with RAF-style understatement, explained that the boat wouldn't respond to the tiller. A lot different from my reaction I imagine. I would have been crying on the pontoon and emptying the wee out of my wellies with a firm promise to sell the boat at the earliest opportunity.

It's a lovely looking craft though, and clearly, very, very sea-worthy.

Take care all,
