We really like using vacuum bags for packing away spare bedding and clothes. It keeps damp out and greatly reduces the volume of things like duvets.
Our household hoover has no problem sucking the air out of these bags, but so far we haven't found a boat-friendly hoover that can do this onboard.
We have (or had- it just died) a handheld cordless Dyson which, whilst it seems quite powerful, is not up to the task. The dinghy pump in 'suck' mode can't do it either.
I see Makita do an 18v hoover, I like all my Makita toys so am tempted to add another to the collection...
