I'm considering buying a boat that was copperguarded in 2003.

If anyone else has had a similar experience I would appreciate enlightenment on a couple of points.

Will the surveyor be able to get a meter reading on the hull without damaging the coating?

I would be putting the boat on a swinging mooring so their would be a need to haul her out for the winter. Would this seriously degrade the Coppercoat in the same way that anti foul would?

I'm sure there are other questions but can't think of any at the moment so if you can answer them before I ask them then please do.

Surveyor will read 'through' the coppercoat - so no worries there.

If applied in 2003 it has loads of life left - ours is 11 years old and still going strong.

Lifting out for the winter not an issue - some re-abrade it before launching (rub with scotchbrite pad) others don't - we had good results last season without but have done it this season.

Here's a picture of our hull - 12 months in the water (the last 7 of that without moving from her marina berth in high fouling water) - the stripe you can see is there the lifting slings were and hence didn't get jet washed (11 year old Coppercoat):

All we had to do was a 'quick' (SWMBO did it - the boat is 37 feet LOA so it took a few hours!) rub over with a scotchbrite pad and she's ready to go again. The Coppercoat is still thick at the waterline so has loads of life yet I suspect.

I wouldn't hesitate in buying another boat with it applied.

"Launched over 15 years ago, Coppercoat is the original long-life copper rich epoxy anti-foul. As with most successful products, lesser imitations have appeared in the intervening period. Inspite of bold claims, products such as Cupro FF, CopperGuard, Cu17, Halcyon 5000, Copperbot 2000, Cop-R-poxy (to name but a few) have all failed and been discontinued. Coppercoat is unique, having been continually available since 1991 and is the only coating to have a well proven (not theoretical!) lifespan of 10 years plus. This helps to explain why over 30,000 customers in more than 40 countries currently use Coppercoat."

Copperguarded in 1998 and still fine.. we jet wash in the slings while scrubbing with a stiff yard broom and straight back in.. only ever get a thin slime - in Gosport. Usually can arrange deal with yard just after those who were ashore have gone back in, and before the new seasons breakages start arriving. See photo on previous thread.

If it is covered n copper, why is the hull white (ish)? I suspect I am being stupid but I like the results shown above...

cheers,
