Coppercoat quickie

Quick question - boat was coppercoated last year. She's just come out and in slings overnight.

After pressure washing should I reactivated by light scrub with scotch pad?

Or something else?

If the Coppercoat is working well and all that was needed was the pressure wash to restore her to a clean hull then, as I understand it, you do not need to do anything more.

It isn't copper that is the active agent, it's copper oxide. This takes a little time to develop, so 'reactivating' is taking off the active stuff and consuming more of the precious copper.

I have been told both ways - ! Boat has been afloat all year - first year no fouling just a bit of slime, thats taken off with brush from pontoon. Boat put back in last year, only having been given a light rub on one side with scotch bright, to see what the result would be this year.

Only need to abrade the CC when it starts to loose it's effectiveness, otherwise let well alone.

Mine didn't work great the first season, but brilliant this season - only light slime. I understand it takes time for the oxidisation to take place. When it does, the hull goes a fetching shade of green. If that sounds like yours, leave it alone!

+1. Mine us still working great after 5 years with nothing but a pressure wash every 12-18 months.

A new theory on this was raised here some time ago, and makes sense.

What you are doing by 'abrading' is not exposing more copper, you are merely removing small traces of green growth which the pressure washer has missed. You get less growth as a result.

I was hauled today and pressure washed. There were still small traces of growth left behind. I have been careful to 'abrade' them all away with a Scotchbrite, and will report back in due course.

Thats very interesting, After the last/first pressure wash, I could see areas that looked to have been missed but when dry they looked like dried sandy/grassy areas. Hence why i only did one side with Scotchbright. will also report back after next lift out.
