Hi All,

I’m looking to Coppecoat the boat this year and I’m just making sure it’s going to give me what I want.

We’ve got a saildrive and obviously a prop which I understand cannot be Coppercoated.

What would you use on these to ensure that we can lift and scrub without having to spend much time ashore applying three coats of Antifoul etc etc.

My ideal plan would be an annual lift and hold in order to scrub, change anodes and take care of any Saildrive and Prop related anti foul / maintenance.

Thanks

Velox as described in the linked thread is one approach, but it requires very careful preparation and may not last more than 2 or 3 years. Prep is difficult on the saildrive housing as ideally you should get back to bare metal, but that means removing the factory coating and not sure that is a good idea. The metal primer (either Hammerite or Velox) may well stick to the existing coating but i have not tried. On my Coppercoated Bavaria I used the normal Hempel Ecopower spray primer and top coat and this was reasonable lasting a year with just a few barnacles. Props are a different problem depending on what prop you have. If a standard Volvo aluminium, similar issues to the drive housing except that adhesion of Ecopower is poor on the blades and adhesion of Velox may be difficult. Easier if you have a folding or feathering prop as it is easier to apply Velox to bronze. I did the blades in Velox and the hub in Ecopower on my Bavaria as the hub seemed to suffer less from fouling than the blades. On my current boat with a feathering prop adhesion was poor with Ecopower so this year I bit the bullet and went Velox.

I aim for once a year wash, but with a saildrive you also have to think about anode changes. Our club does not allow any painting while in the strops and Ecopower really needs a top up to go another year. Photos show my Bavaria and my current Velox coated prop.

Personally I'd just use normal AF on the sail drive. It doesn't take long to do if you are on a lift and hold. Ive had my present and past 2 boats coppercoated and it makes life a lot easier.

Prop - Velox or leave bare. Little else seems to work. Personally, I leave them bare.

Not advised to use normal copper based antifoul on aluminium saildrive housings, only Ecopower or Trlux.

On MoBos the prop and other gear is commonly coated with Prop Speed or Prop One, both are silicone coatings. Like Velox the silicone coatings need careful preparation. Prop Speed is very common here, Oz, on MoBos - cannot comment on the UK - but worth checking. You could treat both prop and sail drive.

If you check Vyv's (Cox) - website you will find he had his prop, or one of his props, copper plated. Worth reading his experience.
