Anybody had any experience of this good or bad and does anybody have the name of reputable companies that would undertake the work in the Solent area ?
Whether it's Copperbot, Copper guard or any of the other copper-named anti-foulings, the boat we are buying has had one of these treatments approx 4/5 years ago.
Now, as a result of this, or more probably due to a fair degree of neglect ie left in standing water for the last couple of years, the hull has osmosis. I understand covering an osmotic hull (whether it's obvious or not) with an epoxy coat such as copperthingy is not a good idea, as it traps moisture.
The broker, before we had it tested for osmosis, said the small bubbles were between the coats of Copperwotsit, and not in the gelcoat, and therefore not osmosis. From this, I gather he was hoping they were caused by the copperwotsit, as osmosis can put off prospective buyers. Either way, I think I shall stick to regular antifouling - if we're allowed to apply anything to our bottoms, that is, with recent regs concerning forbidden substances - after the hull is peeled and re-gelled. The yard will be applying an epoxy coat or two on to the new gelcoat - prevention being better that cure. I hope it works out.
I've never used this myself, but had the original Scott Bader Copperclad on my boat when it was first produced. All I can say is that it was more trouble than it's worth.
There have been several threads on the subject (mainly on Scuttlebutt) over the last 18 months.
The general consensus of those who had used the product was of dissatisfaction, though whether this was due to the product or the commercial dealings with the company, was hard to ascertain.
I would proceed with caution and a long spoon in your hand.

I thinK you may be confusing Copperbot and Coppercoat with Copperguard. Both Copperbot and Coppercoat are still being manufactured and sold successfully with good results and a large following.
Copperguard is the product that failed. This was made by Synthetic Solutions of Cornwall who went out of business. The complaints you are remembering stem from this failed product and company.
One final point, do not try to compare Copperbot or Coppercoat with your old Scott Bader Copperclad - that did not use epoxy technology and simply was copper held in the polyester gelcoat. The basic problem was that the gelcoat did not break down to release the copper, therefore the anti-fouling properties were hidden. On the other hand, the epoxies used in CB and CC break down to release the copper and therefore keep growth levels extraordinarily low.
Is this the same Richard Foster who owes thousands of pounds to customers of his from when he ran the failed company Synthetic Solutions who produced the useless and failed product Copperguard. If it is, I strongly suggest you tread with extreme caution and your wallet tightly closed. If it is not the same Richard Foster, please ignore my humble opinion!
