Thought it was about time is asked the questions for a change, my Princess 388 has epoxy based copper antifoul, after the first lift in my ownership I took advice from the yard to abraid the bottom with wet and dry sandpaper to expose the copper hence to make it work better, however after this years lift and scrub in no time at all the growth is very bad.

So any info for next years lift out, please reply.

Paul.

Yes but all antistuff is all crap and only designed for us passing money on. Get a disabled thingy from doctor and loads of antybiopticis and stick that on the botttom, Or tar or emultion paint from Woolies, its all far better than £££££££00000000 from Int Paints or whoever.
Letts face it. Envent a problem then sort of fix it but then not fix it so well that you dont have to come back for another fix.

Copper/epoxy antifouling works very well when correctly applied. I know of a boat in Mallorca that had virtually no fouling on Copperbot after 5 years. Photos have been shown of boats kept in tropical locations that performed similarly.

A recent problem, widely reported in the yachting press, was that one of the producers (Coppercoat?) inadvertently supplied copper-nickel powder instead of copper. Anti-fouling properties of Cu-Ni are pretty poor. Many yachtsmen are currently trying to recover their money from the manufacturer.

The other problem is that adhesion is not too good unless application conditions are perfect. I assume that yours is still in place?

Thanks for the replies, firstly, Longjohnsilver, Ihave a nice certificate from some jockey in Southampton, who when I phoned for some info told me he was no longer in the game, it was applied in 1996, so its time may be up, do I have it done again if so , or go to normal antifoul as so for its only cost me the lifts out etc.

Haydyn, I know what this marine trade is all about as I am in it, but seriously bq emulsion wont stick to my ceiling let alone the bottom at 25 knots, try another answer please, I understand you have a P 35 bet thats really cheap to run as well!.

And to mr vyv cox sounds like a Doctors last time I looked, end of May this year it was still very much in place, in fact when it was rubbed down last year it was so thick the sander would not rub through it, the only places it had started to come off was the ruders, props and shafts and the tabs, so all the stainless work was polished and the tabs antifouled, this polishing was done because the surveyor reccomended it.

Thanks to you all for replies, if you need any engine info please mail etc.

Just to put the record straight, the product that had problems and is no longer available was called Copperguard. It was manufactured by Synthetic Solutions of Cornwall who went out of business.

On the other hand, Coppercoat is still being manufactured and sold successfully by Aquarius Marine Coatings of Dorset (01202 888802) who have been involved with both Copperbot and Coppercoat since 1993. For further info see www.coppercoat.com

We have 2 ribs that are in the water 11 months of the year. As they are only 6 metre boats we used them as a test of coppercoat before the expense of doing our yachts. After the first year the results look good. I`m scanning the internet for companies who can remove the old antifoul, prepare and coppercoat. Anyone got any recommendations in the Southampton area ??

The company in Southampton that do the most anti-fouling removal and Coppercoat application work is ARC Ltd (the Antifoul Removal Company) of Drivers Wharf. Their telephone number is 0800 848 8848. The owner of this business often posts on this forum, under the name "Elessar".

Or you could try Symblast (07957 655978), Hamble Yacht Services (02380 454111), Desty (02380 457776) or Osmotech (02380 456450) amongst others. We have been supplying Coppercoat to all of these companies for many years.

Do you have the facility to put your boat inside a heated building?
There are very real ambient requirements for the application of coppercoat.
If you have it applied outside in these temperatures and damp you can be totally guaranteed it won't work.
We had exactly the same. The original coppercoat was applied in the January's and it didn't work. We had it re-done this year and it now works great.
I would have it done BUT it has to be applied correctly and at this time of year that means having the boat in a heated shed
