Being in new technology at work, i am all in favour of the enthusiasm and knowledge of young people.

So, when No1_Moose suggested another copper -related tested-once-only crackpot-sounding scheme requiring me to buy several hundred quids worth of copper powder to mix with antifoul, i eagerly agreed, and the stuff has turned up on my doorstep. Now wot?

The idea is to have an copper-enriched surface on the boat that will easily repel all the nasty barnacles.

Question is, erm, 23 x 5 m boat, how much paint, and how to apply the powder. Wot about a talcum powder thingy to spray the powder on afterwards eh? or just mix it in and bosh it on? But with how much paint? Heck....

ooh careful there julie: we have to shift the blame *just* enough so it's his fault if it's crap, BUT not so much that if it works he gets too much credit, if any.

1 part copper, 1 part cement , 2 parts antifoul paint.

Well ,no dafter than the original idea (well only a little)

So how did you work out how much copper powder to order in the first place? Reduce normal volume of paint by volume of powder?

I'd say it depends on the paint. What a/f is going to be used, hard, self eroding? How thick will the paint layer be and then theres the question of how the powder is held in suspention and mixing and.............

Just bung it in and mix it with and old broom handle!

if you squirt it onto the wet surface of the paint then you will only get the benefit for a short while before the top surface erodes so I would have throught mix it in. On the other hand I could be talking gibberish as usual!

Ar'nt you the guy who skinned his boat with rapid removal copper? if so I would have thought you had had enough of these crack pot schemes. If you are not the aforesaid accept my apologies, but not my sentiments

I can see a world copper shortage looming with all this experimenting going on.

Can see it now from the paint manufacturers - "Due to the greatly increased demand for raw copper for experimental use purposes by The Copper Maniac (aka TCM) leading to vast irrecoverable wastage of it, we regret to announce that the price of all standard copper based anitfoulings will increase in price by 125%."

cooperbot

I'm sure this is what CopperBot do with their paint system?????

Its basically powered cooper suspended in paint and it is very dense indeed ie like using pure cooper.

Hey, why not get some cooper plates made up and stick them on the underwater hull - there's an idea?

pushing back the barriers

oh, tsk omeaga. I was indeed the protagonist of the ill-fated self adhesive copper project, but it's to people like to whom you owe a debt of gratitude for everything that works - cos my type have screwed it up bigtime at vast personal expense, repeatedly! I mean, how boring would it be if everything worked first time eh? Or even second or third time, hm? Well, obviously not very boring for you, but for me - tedious in the extreme! For example, i am typing this from the confines of my patented Time Travlling machine which is working perfectly after numerous false starts! ok, so far it has only managed to transport me between 1and 2 minutes into the past which is why i am often a bit late for meetings BUT i have great plans which extend dfar far beyong arguing about the exact time of day. See?

You will need 25 ltrs of antifoul working on the basic rule of 2.5 ltrs per 25sq mtr hull area, also giving it 2 coats. so big mixing drum stuff it all in together add a little thinners and stir!!! slap on and admire result!! Not sure what is going to cost the most though the antifoul and added copper dust, or the writ from the Enviromental peeps cos it's not quite kosher!!

Oh god...here we go again......

I've applied copperbot to a couple of boats by spraying, the hardest bit was keeping the epoxy/copper agitated enough as the copper is v heavy and sinks to the bottom, so, dont add thinners to the antifoul as this would help the copper to sink faster.

I reckon for your boat about, hmm, counting on his fingers, hmm, 6 * 2.5 litre tins.

Get a big paint scuttle, pour in a whole tin, add a bag of powder, stir, roller it on.

How hard can it be?

Many years ago when working with Lab equipment we used magnetic stirrers;rotating magnet in box, reaction vessel on top and magnet in liquid.I'm sure No 1 Moose could knock you one up.
Cos as as I see it the biggest problem you'll have is keeping the copper in suspension in your chosen AF medium.
Alternatively you could have Moose in attendance constantly stirring.
