I want paper chart copies of some remote areas of Southeast Asia and Far East, such as the 2/3 US chart copies from Bellingham. Looking for the cheapest I can find.

Admiralty charts are copyrighted and such copies, at least legitimate ones, can't be found. Do I have that right? Or is there a way to get Admiralty paper charts legitimately in other formats?

cheers

I used Tides End/Bellingham charts exclusively from Darwin through Indonesia - Indian Ocean up the Red Sea to the Med where I got back onto BA and Shom charts. The print shop in Darwin will supply photocopies of Admiralty charts for all the above areas but the US ones are fine as well. I backed up the paper with Russian C-Map and pilot books like most cruisers.
There is no cheap way of getting BA charts legally. Frankly for small yachts the 'NOAA' copyright free charts are just as good and much of the coastal areas down south are badly charted on all the systems..

As far as I understand the copyrigh laws are you allowed to buy a BA chart and then make a copy for your own pirvate use. It's sharing or selling to others that is illigal.

There is no legal way of copying Admiralty charts and as Crown copyright, the copyright bit is stronger legally than for any other publisher. Whats more, the HO do involve the lawyers when a more commercial organisation would think it not worthwhile. For example if a club uses a bit of HO chart to illustrate approaches to their moorings.

From what I saw, they will photocopy anything for you in some Spanish ports, using big colour copying machines chosen for that job
