Now thats interesting,... I didnt know that

Tom

It nicely summarizes the difference between the traditional silicate antifreezes and the long life type using organic acid technology ( OAT)
They are of course products aimed at the automotive market and the OAT type are suitable for most vehicles manufactured since 1998. While the silicate type are suitable for vehicles older than that.

Mention should be made perhaps that these are antifreezes based on ethylene glycol based which is a toxic substance and harmful to the environment. It should always be disposed of safely ashore.
There are antifreezes, although not common or readily available in the UK, which are based on "safe" propylene glycol.

And you can get specific antifreeze for drinking water systems (non toxic). Designed for RV, boat, domestic etc.

Saves the system when/if any water is left over winter - ie. something left from draining.
Search for Winterban.

Winterban contains the Propylene Glycol that Vic mentions earlier.

Propylene Glycol is what is now being recommended for sounder transducer installations, by some manufacturers.

The original question was "Can anyone confirm if all antifreeze includes an inhibitor or does it have to be added to the system?"

The answer to that is, "Yes the common ethylene glycol based engine antifreezes do contain inhibitors".

BUT what is not clear is whether or not propylene glycol antifreezes, which seem to be primarily aimed at potable water systems in caravans and RVs, contain inhibitors that would make them suitable for year round or long term use as an engine coolants.
