Is this possible, on two and four stroke engines? Ether with electric drill attachment, which does work on other small engines, or a proper kit, I know it was possible many years ago, as a friend done this on a 40HP outboard.

Some/ many/ most from around 10 hp upwards come with electric starting as an option or with a conversion kit available. The conversion kits are not cheap though.

As you move towards lager engines electric starting becomes the norm although in some case s ( 25- 40hp sort of range) there may be provision for emergency rope starting.

Thank you VicS, I mentioned the above, as my neighbour, had converted back in the 70s a Crescent 500 CS race engine on a 14 ft race boat, I had never heard of this being done, but wondered if it might apply to small engines, I've just had part of my lung removed due to cancer and after 8 weeks thought I would start up my 3.5 hp, wish I hadn't because the pulling motion effected my opp area. That got me thinking about a conversion. Thanks again, Glad we aren't all arseholes, and can answer a question sensibly,

Sorry to hear t that but you'll not find a conversion kit for one that small AFAIK..

Left handed pull possible ?

Some years ago, I had a lawn mower that started by winding a handle on top to tension a spring then push a button to start. IIRR it was not much bigger than a normal recoil but would require carving up the top cover. If you are of an engineering bent, then look at electric starters on small scooters.

Thanks for that tip, it did cross my mind but haven't tried it, is to spin the mag by putting a socket on the mag securing nut into a drill and try and spin the mag, very doubtful this would work,

We also once had a lawnmower with the wind-up spring thingy on the top. When the spring failed I used to start the mower with a socket and drill on the end of the crankshaft - it was however, a mains powered drill.

Best of luck Binman.

I don't see why it shouldn't, assuming a decent drill (and that by "mag" you mean the flywheel). Just remember that you'll need to brace the drill against the torque you're generating.

Or maybe you need one of these? :)

(It does at least show that a proper cordless drill easily has enough power to start an engine.)

Thanks for that, very interesting, I had looked on utube, but missed that item. Haven't seen that contraption for sale. I Will have a go with the 240v drill,

Maybe the OP is a candidate for a Torqueedo?
Or perhaps a smaller outboard?
SWMBO can start my 2hp Yamaha reliably, rarely managed the 3.3 Mercury predecessor. (Both 2 stroke).
There are a lot of small electric start motorbikes and mopeds around now. So suitable motors and sprag clutches are out there.
I can't see a conversion being trivial though, I reckon it would be easier to build an inboard powered tender....
