Can anyone remember which PBO issue had this article featured? I've drawn a blank and so has the copy shop. Or perhaps it was Yachting Monthly or Sailing Today. I've looked through all my back issues but can't find it!

Re: converting a Decca aerial to an FM radio aeria

As I recall, article was about making it into a LW/MW aerial, not VHF.

I put navtex in its place and just used the decca lead to tow the navtex lead through all sorts of nooks and crannies between the pushpit and the chart table.

Definitely. Door stop is the only thing left for it. Bear in mind that Decca was about 98KHz and FM is 98MHz a difference of 1000..... Of course if you are clever and really feel the need you might adapt it to receive the time signals on 60Khz..... Maplin do a time signal receiver module that provides a conversion so that you can see the time on your PC........

Re: converting a Decca aerial to an FM radio aeria

How can I recognise redundant antenna on the mast?
I have a short stubby one which I guess is connected to the "car" radio, a longer one about 3 ft coming from a round base and a similar length one starting from a roughly rectangular box.
Two of these are redundant being no longer connected at the cockpit end, the Decca and an old "TV screen" navtex. I would like to tidy up this junk but you can guess I dont want to cut off the main VHF one which surely is on the mast.

Any suggestions?

I reckon the one from the square box is the navtex, the round one is the vhf and the other! Or it could be, No idea actually!

If the rectangular box has the aerial coming out of one end, with two flanges from the sides of the box, this will be the Navtex aerial. As CCScott says, the long one from the round base is probably the VHF aerial - though to put it next to two receiving aerials is a bit of a no-no mystery. The short stubby round "tube" type aerial could well be from the Decca - especially if it was a NavstarD Decca. (to check if it was the Navstar, there should be a connector under the aerial with a rubber sleeve around the connector.)

Why not use an aerial splitter and you can then use your VHF aerial as your FM aerial.
