I am on my boat floating around in a small and contained lake.

I decide to anchor and the anchor (plus chain) goes over the side with the anchor resting fully on the bottom of the lake.

What, if anything, happens to the depth of water in the lake?

When afloat the boat displaces the weight in air of the boat + anchor.
When anchored, the anchor and grounded chain no longer affects the boat's displacement, so the mass of water displaced is reduced by the mass of the chain in air, less its weight in water...and the dangling chain will not make a difference to the displaced water, so I agree with geoid96, the water will go down.

At what point do I claim a 'Lakesailor' ;):p (re: post #2)

I'd like to think there is a claim under Clause 4b and c of the LakeRegs along the lines of 'similarity' :D:D

The question is whether my answer is”essentially the same” as yours. I would argue that it is not. I am not disputing the points you make, however:
• You do not completely answer the OPs question as what happens to the depth of water in the lake.
• You do not explain the two different and opposing effects on water level caused by the reduction in vessel displacement and the water displaced by the anchor & chain.
My answer merely supplements and clarifies your own and therefore, in my opinion, no Lakesailoring exists. ;)

depends which country it is in. If its scotland the level will increase cos of the rain, if its in the middle of the Sahara it'd be a mirage!

I graciously take your point, but I feel bad...

Edit: Bloomin' eck... just noticed post #3... there's a 'lakesailoring' conspiracy going on in this thread:(

Anchor punches a hole in the lake bed, all the water drains out and you walk ashore and realise, What the hell am I doing posting **** like this.
