A couple of friends of mine have bought a Contessa 28, and are now putting it all back together - but are having trouble remembering how the main sheet was rigged.

The main traveller is in front of the spray hood, and so I have (temporarily) run the sheet through its blocks from the boom to the traveller, forward along the deck to a turning block at the base of the mast then back under the spay hood to where there is a winch and jammer. Well, its stopped the boom swinging about too much, but they are not sure if this is how it was done originally - and I don't know the answer.

It might have gone backwards along the boom from the point above the traveller to a turning block at the end of the boom to an arrangement in the cockpit - but there is no evidence of this.

So, anyone out there who's sailed a Contessa 28, owns or owned one and knows how it was rigged?

Thanks,
Jeff.

My friends is rigged as follows but with no traveller:- the mainsheet is rigged just forward of the (fixed) screen, with a pair of sheet running from the boom, set as far rearwards as practical, then to a strong point at each edge of the coachroof. Thus he has effectively two mainsheets, and you can control the mainsheet easily & safely. The sheets exit to the cockpit through holes in the bottom of the screen suround and then thro' two Spinlock jammer thingies - not proper jammers or clutches - the PX range? Works reasonable well, but you do get two lots of mainsheets in the cockpit but nowhere as much string as in a boom end type mainsheet. Although there is no traveller you can adjust the boom position very well with the two sheets.
Sounds as though how you've done it sounds OK.

I dug out photos of my old Contessa, and you are broadly right.

After a couple of turns up and down between blocks on the traveller and the boom, the sheet then comes from the block on the traveller, forward and up to a block underneath the boom, then down to a turning block on the base of the mast, across to a deck organiser on the starboard side, and from there to a jammer (and winch) on the stbd side coachroof.

I may have some pictures or literature somewhere, so PM me if you're still stuck

Thanks to both dickh and paranoid - having looked at my friends Co 28, I can see now where things belong.

Regards,
Jeff.
