I rather foolishly filled a 25 litre container with diesel without checking that I had picked the right container. It had been used for waste oil and I now have a lot of rather murky diesel.

Will it settle out to skim off the best to use in an agricultural tractor, or is it better used as an accelerant for bonfire night?

Let it settle for a week or so, then stretch some tights over the neck of a large funnel, strain it from one drum to another, but try to pour steadily and stop as the muck approaches the neck of the drum.

Leave it another week and repeat, then into the boat.

Ditch it in the nearest waste oil tank. It's what, 35 quids worth if it's DERV, rather less if it's red and is it really worth the potential hassle of clogged filters or worse?

The old oil will not be a detriment to the diesel in operating in your engine. It will contain burnt carbon that makes it black. Presumably the oil has been filtered continually in the engine oil filter. So hopefully not much in the way of large sediment. Yes you will risk contamination of the fuel filter in the tractor but quite likely not really. Your call on the risk to the tractor. good luck olewill

It rather depends on just what had previously been put in the waste oil container. A small quantity of uncontaminated used engine oil should not be a problem but if like me you tend to put all manner of mucky oily waste in it, it would not be sensible you use it for anything critical.

We tend to fire any old diesel in the tractor with no ill effects so far.

Gardner used to give instructions on how to use sump oil as fuel
Given that a CAV filter is 5 microns, I dont see an issue as long as there isnt water or big lumps of cack in it!

I'd syphon it through an old fuel filter and put it in the tank, preferably diluted with some new stuff, but unless it's been mixed with a fair quantity of say brake fluid, ATf or whatever, a bit of oil should not hurt?

Ta for the replies. It is red diesel, so not huge money, but I would rather put it into a tractor that will coast to a halt on the side of the field rather than into a boat which will coast into the coast just when I need power.

Its only old engine oil, but its black and sooty so the diesel has a subtle hue, and I hope it settles to the bottom of the drum. Oh well, silly me.
