Containers from ships...

I understood that what makes 'em so exciting is that they often float just awash once swept off the decks of the carriers.

So, YOU don't see 'em & neither does your radar! That way you can hit 'em much harder!

We came across one of these floating between Auckland and Sydney once while I was in HMAS SYDNEY. We thought it was an upturned boat to start with. We launched the boat and found it was full of those plastic wine coolers. We 'salvaged' enough for each of the crew and then blew the thing up a a danger to shipping.

Fun at the time but it could have buggered a small boat.

I'm v impressed that you can tell that's a container washed ashore. More importantly, ho long do you spend digitally beachcombing the Globe? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

And why is the resolution much higher on exactly that part of the coast? I would expect something military in the area. Container (or whatever it is) could have something to do with it even?

Actually, I found it (or rather the notification of it) by chance. Although I am fascinated by that coastline and hope one day to sail there. Preferably behind the islands. As for anything military, I doubt that: there's absolutely nothing there bar the odd fishermen's shack and wreck.

Well, if military, the fact that it cannot be seen does not mean it cannot be there. Still there must be a reason why the resolution is higher in that area.

Looks like a VC10 sitting on the pan at RAF Mount Pleasant. This is probably a passenger version - not sure if they are still running the tanker version.
The more interesting parts of the airfield are on the other side of the tarmac. For example 51 48 30 S 58 30 15 W or 51 48 35 S 58 17 35 W (not really sailing but this one is mainly RN - only comment is that the fishing was good from this unit) other more interesting facilities are there if you look for them! This was a trip down memory lane - I could see my office again.

The circular structures to the west and south of the second co-ordinates look interesting.

Df aerials perhaps?

OTH radar?

Or would you have to shoot me?

OT other interesting secret things.....

While your in Google earth, search for Area 51
They have nicely labeled it for every one to see it

BIG runways

And one night while watching the Hunt for Red October, I did a little bit of my own hunting....

69º15'33.58N, 33º20'17.88E and 69º23'09.65N 32º47'45.92E

There are more up there if you get bored one evening!

With all this collective searching...anyone up for looking over the deserts of Iraq? WMD anyone? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes Bob its Warton NNW of Preston don t have Google on here but the airport is whitened out in the same way as the Falklands island making the lack of contrast hide the planes. There is one of those mysterious twin engined Cessna s there as fitted with a complete ECM pack and oversized radome. Saw one at Edinbugh one day and the poor pilot was snapped by every happy snapper in the car park.

No one would have taken any notice if the plane had been painted normal colours /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
