connecting Garmn 152 - Raymarine 54e DSC Vhf

I know this has been covered before many times but I am struggling to understand what exactly I need to connect the two together -

one posting suggests directly splicing the two wires from the vhf into the black gps wire (power) and another suggests there is an adaptor cable for this ?

what would people recomend?

I would also like to connect the gps to my laptop - is this possible at the same time as the VHF?

last but not least - I recently bought a new cable and arial for the garmin 152 - its a GA 29 which is great unfortunatly the cable ends are set and I need to thread it through my coach roof! the hole is only a cable width - can I remove the end and re attach some way without destroying the cable?

Emo, you will need the manuals for both VHF and Garmin which should explain what to connect.

However the Garmin end connector can be cut off and replaced. In fact had to do mine a couple of times as they are not waterproof and corrosion eventually gets the wiring inside needing the cable to be cut back a bit. In fairness it is mounted in a very exposed position. Chandlers sell new end pieces for £5.

Read page 83 of the GPS manual & page 7 of the VHF manual.

Take a pair of wires. Connect 1 between GPS NMEA OUT & the VHF NMEA In +. Connect the other between the GPS ground & the VHF NMEA In -.

Now read page 84 of the GPS manual & activate the NMEA data.

Only other thing to do is to decide what you want to see on the VHF screen: time or COG/SOG.

Job done. How to connect the GPS to VHF has to be one of the most commonly asked questions on the forum.
 
I have just done this with the same set up. You have to connect nmea out from radio and - be from gps to the same negative power. I used negative on power supply
 
If the cable runs are short, or power & data run together, you can connect the VHF NMEA IN - to ground & rely on the ground connections from the VHF & GPS to complete the circuit. However, it's not recommended & a separate return wire should run together with the data wire. A ground wire is not really ground everywhere, it's just connected to ground. Professional engineers have a problem understanding it sometimes.

Here's why. NMEA is actually a differential system. Current flows out of the + and returns through the - of a talker. The wires should run together. Therefore if noise is picked up by one wir, it will also be picked up by the other. Since the listener actually listens to "In+" - "In-", noise on both is cancelled out.

Most GPS units only have Out+. Out- is connected to Gnd inside the GPS. They use Gnd as Out-. Most VHFs have both In+ & In-. So connect VHF Out+ to GPS In+. Connect VHF In- to Gnd and you have completed the circuit. But, if the cables have a different cable run, they can pick up different noise & you lose noise immunity.

okay ..

I was on board today armed with the valuable info from you folks and all apeared in order untill I discovered that the blue wire (gps nmea out) and the black(gps ground/data) were already connected to a small black box -

and I discovered this is a - E85001 Interface for seatalk

I followed the wires from this and I belive it to be connected to the raymarine depth sounder.

the wiring seems complicated , and there is also a standard wiring connector pannel outside of the seatalk box, the gps ground is connected (crimped) outside with two other black wires which apear to be power (although I taught that to be the red one? )

basicly I have
garmin gps 152
raymarine st 60 depth
raymarine st 60 speed and log
raymarine st 60 wind
raymarine 54e dsc vhf

I would like to connect the dsc vhf up and keep the other instruments connected to the gps and in the end I would like to connect the lot to a laptop (pc)

is this possible and where can I get the info for it? and parts if nessisary
Im no electrician but can follow simple digrams etc. can you offer advice?
