Can any one help please?

Boat is fitted with MLR 312 GPS.

Radio fitted is Icom M411 radio

I need to connect the two together.

MLR States the following wiring:

Blue -0 volt
Red +10 to 36V DC
Brown Orange or Purple Reference RS422(NMEA OUT)
Yellow Output RS422 (NMEA OUT)
Green Reference RS232
Black Input RS232
White Output RS232

The radio simply shows NMEA(-) and NMEA (+)

Spare wires appear to be yellow black and purple

You need to select which nmea port you want and then configure it.

The RS232 out is probably the one (white output)as this is nmea 1.8 where RS 422 is nmea 2.0

You might need to use the Blue )v as ground . Just connect to the Nmea in on the radio. Possibly a phono connection.

MLR Brown Orange or Purple - Reference RS422(NMEA OUT) to VHF NMEA (-) IN

MLR Yellow - Output RS422 (NMEA OUT) to VHF NMEA (+) IN

B***er _ forgot to ask does it have to be a screened cable?

No. Bit of telephone wire, burglar alarm wire, CAT5 cable etc will be ok. Try and keep it away from power cables if you can, but in my experience they haven't caused any problems. I used alarm wire from the overhead VHF to the plotter at the helm, runs 4m overhead, down a back pillar and then forward to the helm, in amongst all sorts of other cables, no problems.
