I have installed OpenCPN before, but today I had to install a new SSD into my laptop and did a complete reinstall. After installing OpenCPN using Synaptic package manager instead of the apt command I had to enable a port so that a USB GPS dongle could be connected. I struggled to remember the command, but eventually remembered it. For anyone else using Linux the terminal command is sudo usermod -a -G dialout username of course using your own username. After the command you need to reboot for it to take effect.

And now something odd. The GPS has a fix and dashboard shows 9 satellites, and there are three green bars shown at top right, but the position symbol on the chart is yellow not green or red. Is this just a change in vesrion 5.2 or is something wrong?
