Can confirm that the fuel pontoon in Lagos doesnt take credit cards etc.... only Amex.

Embarrased myself a couple of weeks ago by filling up with fuel in Lagos, not seeing the "No Credit Cards" sign, and not having enough cash.

Scrabbled it together from the crew.

Cheers

Must be a Portuguese thing - Doca de Alcantara in Lisbon refuse all plastic except American Express. Required an emergency trip to hole in the wall for enough cash to pay 3 weeks marina charges.

Amex must have done some sort of a deal with these people - usually its t'other way round, ie Amex not accepted by small merchants because their commission charge is prohibitive.

No problems paying for fuel and marina charges with credit cards in Cascais, (or Bayona, Spain).

Had to send cash for a Raymarine Autohelm part to a Lisbon distributor as they couldnt accept plastic and my bank wouldnt do a transfer without my actual signature, (Nat West) - the distributor sent the part without waiting to be paid... excellent service, but possibly open to abuse.

I wonder if some fuel/marina suppliers have been stung by fraudulent recalls on credit cards?

Can't understand why that should be, Amex are a bunch of useless wa*kers. Up themselves, incompetent, where do I stop? Anyone who uses an Amex charge card needs their head examined.

Hope they try and sue me now, that would be fun.......... Then I would hump them for expenses again.

The cost of processing credit card transactions in Portugal is fiendishly expensive for the traders, we were told 21%. So it's no wonder that they will either discourage the use of cards or, as we have found, charge a hefty premium if you want to use one. Perhaps it's the government's way of keeping personal debt in check.
