I have a confession to make. I was taken into a store called 'Lidl' today, it is a type of pile it high sell it cheap supermarket type store with a lot of German and Eastern European goods. They sell the odd bit of hardware in there and I fell victim to an electric immersion pump /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif It runs on 240v and is 550watt so will run from my generator, it pumps 10,000 ltrs per hour, has a ceramic seal, stainless steel motor shaft, rugged plastic casing, automatic float switch, noisless maintenance free capicitor motor with a themoprotective switch, it also has a 10mtr rubber-sheathed cable, a delivery valve G1" 10 G1/2", a multi angle adapter and a three year guarantee. It can pump up to 8mtrs high, it cost £22.99. I thought it would be a good back up to the manual bilge pump I bought. I have pumped out my bath into the toilet and it is great, i could play all night just watching the sucking action. It is for use in clear to slightly dirty water (suspended matter to a max 5mm), not that the bath water was dirty /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

So there you have it, am I a victim of nonsense buying or is this the bargain of the year /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I will only use it on longer trips like the CI cruise in a few weeks time.

Better safe than sorry if the Cuddy springs a leak /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Oh! and another thing, they were selling disposable cameras with flash for a couple of quid or three, I bought 5 and have got one for the boat and one for each glove box, could be useful for evidence gathering if there was an incident.

Happy, you are a true gadget man like myself, I salute you!! I buy things on the spur of the moment, which inevitably NEVER get used, and ends up being sold out through one of the kids car boot stalls!! Long may it be so............now, where did you say you got that pump from??

I do HOPE it never gets used in anger, but what price can be put on safety /forums/images/icons/wink.gif This pump shigts 167 ltrs a minute, I saw some in the Screwfix catologue that shift a measly 125ltrs per hour, the cost £69.99, I'm quids in aren't I /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

You never know, it could be worth it's weight in gold if I found a holed boat /forums/images/icons/wink.gif. Salvage, now how does that work /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Sprung a leak? 'Happy Pumpers' available to pump you dry, fully mobile pumpimg equipment.

Are these places common then? I have never seen one before.

I had never been in a shop like that, but goodness it's an eye opener to see what is available in these places. I think I will need some therapy because I picked up their flyer for this Thursday's bargains when new stuff comes in /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I had a look in that Maplins electrical place and ended up with a 12v 2,000,000 candlepower floodlight with ciggie adapter for £9.99, and that INCLUDED the bulb! it is so light it fall within my permitted gadget allowance, you never know one day that may save a life /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Your worse than my wife........"ohh look I can save 5 quid if I buy two".
"Yes dear, but you don't even have a use for one let alone two of 'em"

Why would you want a pump that acn empty the contents of your bath in five seconds flat. If you've got a hole in your boat that lets in that much water in such a short space of time. You'llhave just enough time to put out a distress call on the VHF. What with the pump the light and the rapid inflator, the battery will be dead in five seconds flat! I'm now really starting to worry about you.

No Barry, this is for use with the generator. I must say I have not seen so much fluid come out of such a small hole, it was like a firemans hose on full pelt /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif I guess it would keep my boat afloat until I could set up and prepare my emergency quick drying fibreglass repair kit, and fit in my wooden pegs /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I was just concerned because someone mentioned that if I had a serious hole the hand bilge would no t be any good, this is just a backup for that eventuality. Anyway when we have the next meet, it will make one hell of a water pistol /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: WARNING, WARNING!!

Someone else said that, I don't know what one is. Anyway I have found a new form of spare propulsion for my boat, I think they call it jet drive, I will fit twelve across the transom and see what happpens /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Caution

240v + bilge full of sea water seems to be a fairly risky mixture. Hope you were not in the bath with the pump!

I trust the guarantee does cover it for use in salt water.

Seriously though if boat is flooding 240V is not a good idea to have floating (or sinking) about.

Unless electrocution is a preferable alternative to drowning.

Off to lidl for me.

Make sure you use a circuit breaker for safety if using it around the house /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Be warned it blasts the water out like a rocket. The second time I tried I didn't have a hose on and the thing was shooting around my bath propelled by itself like a 'pump possessed' /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Very difficult to catch /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

I'm not the only one to test new bilge pumps in the bath ! . Mine was a 12V ,2000LH.....& no "incidents" (phew).

Installed, with pipe, it manages a genuine 20 liters/minute & no need to break out the generator.
