Conference to examine charting of Irish waters

So we have our own "Hydrographic Office" at long last? That only took 85 years! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Many of the existing BA charts were surveyed by the famous navigator Captain Bligh of Bounty fame, and have proven the test of time. His chart of Dublin Bay is still in use today. It was amazing what they could do with a sextant for triangulation on it's side in those days.

It's quite interesting when you see this in context with something I saw on MAIB site a few weeks back web page

It goes into the HO budget (which ahsn't increased for years) and the costs of surveying most of these areas properly... Makes you think a bit, us being a seafarin' nation 'n all

Its not just Irish Waters ,I noticed on the Admiralty chart for Lundy Island to hartland Point large bits of it were last surveyed in 1890 or there about. I dont imagine they used side scan sonar /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I guess if the water is deeper than any ships draught the exact depth down to the last inch is a bit academic.

Well I suppose the old cliche, where many boats go, even old charts are good as any obstructions they missed in the survey have probably been hit by now, and hence corrected onto the chart.
