I was using another forum, one I use regularly. Just made a post, passed on Roger Shaw's link to the wiring diagram of a fuel gauge in fact, attempted to return to the index and everything froze. No response to mouse or keyboard. Then the screen changed to this:

WTF and how should I have got out of that situation. Even the power button did nothing.

Vista Home Basic and IE 7

Not an expert but it looks like your video card is not playing although I'm surprised that the power button did nothing. Did you hold it in for long enough?

As already stated try unplugging it, but would add hold in the power button (with it unplugged) for about 2 minutes this then forces a full discharge of the capacitors in the power supply / board etc and effectively resets the lot .

Worth a go!

Thanks for the suggestions. I did switch off at the supply and all is now OK. I was a bit worried about switching off like that because they say it can cause damage. There was even a warning about it on the new power supply unit that I fitted in the old computer.
Not much else you can do when keyboard, mouse and power button are all dead!

Thanks, Cliff, for the warning about my PM box. A bit of space created now
