After the various problems on which I have already commented, I took my note-book to a lawyer friend who knows more about computers than anybody else I know.
After scanning, he found 475 separate viruses! Some switched off Norton; others wouldn't allow Norton to boot. Others wouldn't allow programmes to be disinstalled.
This was not a record however; he found > 700 on his brother-in-law's PC. It should be noted when I used the free-scan on the McAfee site there were apparently 11 items!
He cleared the machine using a Russian designed programme : FProt. He maintains that the Russians are very hot in this area (maybe because they design the viruses as well ?)
Thanks anyway for all the suggestions you made; it's easier to get older than to get wiser.
