Hi

hoping somebody might be able to help me

I have windows xp pro which has windows media player 9 on it / running in it, this damn program opens everytime computer is booted up and nowhere in preferences or setup or anything can i tell it only to open when i click a button.

Ive deleted under windows explorer, I have used add/ remove program and each time i delete it i sit and wait and 3 seconds later its loaded itself back to wherever i have deleted it from like magic!!

how do i get rid of this &%£$&&**^%^ thing! for good. I only use it to listen to music but now its pushed me too far and i want it gone!

help im inches away from smashing up my computer with a hammer, ill regret that though afterwards as i have done similar with a stereo system, these computers things are still so frustrating and tiring to fiddle with and im not a beginner on them, what am i missing here!

any help much appreciated.

Kevin

Try creating another user profile and see if it starts on the new one. Have you looked in the startup folder?

Try creating another profile as a test.

Unfortuantely Windows media player is part of the OS and cannot be removed.

You could try "upgrading" to media player 10 and see if that helps.

You could try running Regedt32 and search for media player 9 to see if it's being called from the registry.

or Try running Msconfig to disable shortcuts in the StartUp folder, just in case there is more than one startup folder.

maybe you have a media file in startup and if media player is the default player it may be starting to play the media file. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

also check the options settings in MediaPlayer. If you have got it set to check for updates each time you start, it will start automatically, even if it is not in the startup folder

Hi Kevin
Does the mediaplayer actually play anything or just open? Does this happen when you have an email programme (outlook express?) open?
Some rogue emails actually call other programs like media player or internet explorer as soon as an email is clicked on. Look in you remails and see if there is some rubbish in there and delete . See if that fixes it.

Hi,

Try restoring the system to an earlier time when you didn't have this problem.

click on control panel.

performance and maintenance.

system restore.

then choose a date before this started, to restore to.

it may help.

Do a google search for a utility called Startup manager, it's usuall a free download.

This program lists all programs that run at start up and lets you disable those that you don't need to have running all the time. Disabled programs aren't deleted but only then open when you want them and click on them.

I've been using it for years to stop stuff like Office, MSN and virtually all media players from auto loading at start and it makes the start up process a lot quicker with no unneccessary junk running in the background.

If none of the suggestions you get here solve the problem try the forums on ybw's sister http://www.webuser.co.uk as that is where you'll find many computer experts.
