I am in the process of makinf installations in the boat. One item I do not like at all is the marine head with required holding tank. The tank takes space, it is a risk of not so funny work if ANYTHING goes wrong, it requires a through hull (all them are a risk) and the mechanisms of the system are sensitive and smell is part of the game.
I have come across at least a couple of products based on compostation. Especially one of them is very compact and the manufacturer presents quite convincing arguments why this is a viable system. I would love to change to this principle, but before doing so it is of course interesting to know if anyone else has already practical experience? Positive or negative?
If anyone needs details about the two products I have found so far, pls send me an email and I will forward.
I am eagerly waiting for your response.

The is a traditionl marine loo that uses the composting principal, very simple, totally reliable and cheap - its called a bucket, but frowned on in busy anchorages/marinas

exactly--in Turkey they put somting in the water that turned it red if a toilet was used!!But yes a bucket!thats the best just be sure to have some water in it and when you throw it overboard just make sure the rim of the bucket hits the water thus sending it down! and be sure to be up before the rest! a bucket makes sure you get off before the mass is on the move--tide permiting---that goes for using the bucket!

I'd be interested in more information on the two products the original poster has found out about. Is there really one that would work on a boat without usinf vast amounts of electricity? The bucket is all very well - but really not acceptable in crowded, non tidal anchorages and the like.
